Why “mid” can sound harsher than “average”¶

Mid is a brief negative or lukewarm review. A speaker may mean that something is merely okay, or that it failed to justify the attention it received. Dictionary.com defines the slang in terms of mediocrity and disappointment. The word often dismisses more than it explains.

An original comparison: “The café was average for the price” states a benchmark. “That café is mid” leaves the benchmark unstated. Readers may hear the second as harsher because it gives the subject little room for qualification.

Earlier uses and later visibility¶

Dictionary.com’s slang history connects the term to middle and describes earlier use for mid-grade cannabis, followed by broader quality judgments in the 2010s. It also describes later circulation on platforms including TikTok. This sequence does not support treating a single recent viral video as the invention of the word.

A current caption usually needs none of that older context to be understood. The history explains the semantic path; it is not an endorsement of any product or activity mentioned in that history.

Original examples with different targets¶

• “The trailer was incredible. The ending was mid.” The criticism is limited to one part of a film.
• “My first attempt at frosting: proudly mid.” The speaker lowers the stakes by reviewing their own work.
• “Mid at full price; great at half price.” Value and quality are being judged together.

Notice how adding the target prevents a sweeping claim. “The ending” gives readers a clearer point of disagreement than a bare “mid” under a poster.

Using it in a meme¶

A useful structure is expectation followed by an underwhelming result. For example, pair “Three tutorials, two shopping trips, one elaborate plan” with a photo of your own very ordinary sandwich. “Mid” then comments on the effort-to-result mismatch.

For the reverse, use bussin when a modest-looking meal exceeds expectations. Keep the image and the caption aligned: an impressive result with a mid label may read as irony, but the setup needs to make that intentional.
