Origin

Mid is short for middling and was long used to grade average, unremarkable goods — a way of saying something is only mid-grade. As internet debate culture heated up, it hardened into a blunt insult meaning mediocre and overrated, amplified through hip-hop and gaming discourse on Twitter and Twitch around 2021–2022, where declaring a rival’s favorite “mid” became a standard mic-drop.
