Bongo Cat

Origin¶

Bongo Cat is a minimalist animation of a small white cat-like figure tapping its paws against a surface like a pair of bongo drums. The drawing came from Twitter artist @StrayRogue, who posted an animated cat slapping a table in May 2018; Twitter user @DitzyFlama then edited bongos into the loop and synced the tapping to the “Athletic” theme from Super Mario World, posting the result on May 7, 2018. That combined version drew over 3,800 retweets and 7,000 likes and became the canonical form. StrayRogue has since clarified that the character was drawn as “a cat-like blob rather than an actual cat,” a detail settled with a follow-up full-body sketch.

Spread¶

The loop was ideal raw material: two frames, no dialogue, and a beat that could be re-timed to anything. Remixes appeared within days.

• May 20, 2018 — GarinBadger’s full-length version, past 61,000 views.
• June 7, 2018 — Kirk Keely’s electric guitar remix, also past 61,000 views.
• September 8, 2018 — a widely shared parody by BananaManPlays.

Covers spanned Persona 5, Super Mario, Toto’s “Africa” and Darude’s “Sandstorm.” An interactive browser toy let anyone play along with the keyboard, and key-mapping software grew out of open-source code published by Hamish Duncanson on GitHub in 2018, later forked and extended by other developers so streamers could put a live Bongo Cat on screen. Polygon, Uproxx and Vice all named it among the best memes of 2018, and The Daily Dot called it the most earnest and wholesome meme of that year. Meaning and usage¶

Bongo Cat has no punchline and needs none. It functions as a wholesome, endlessly adaptable mascot for music and rhythm content, requiring no words to be funny or charming. People use it to “perform” songs, to celebrate a beat drop, or simply to add a cute animated musician to a clip. Its simplicity and reusability are the whole appeal — the same quality that keeps Popcat and Keyboard Cat in circulation years after their moment.

Later life¶

The character never really went away. A Bongo Cat cover of Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” went viral on TikTok in 2023, and fans reportedly sang that version at Eilish’s 2024 concerts. In March 2025 a free idle game simply called Bongo Cat launched on Steam, developed by Julius Krüger and Marcel Zurawka: the cat sits on the taskbar and drums along as you type, with cosmetic items dropping every half hour. It climbed into the upper reaches of Steam’s most-played charts through spring 2025 and holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating from tens of thousands of reviews. Also in 2025, Filipino congressman Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga adopted the character as part of his public branding.
