Tung Tung Tung Sahur

Origin¶

Tung Tung Tung Sahur was created by Indonesian TikTok creator Noxa (@noxaasht), who first uploaded the character on 28 February 2025 — a day before Ramadan began in Indonesia. It arrived as part of the local “Anomali” trend, a wave of AI-generated creatures that fed directly into the wider Italian brainrot universe.

The name comes from a real Ramadan ritual. In Indonesia and across much of Southeast Asia, people walk the streets before dawn beating a kentongan — a traditional bamboo-and-wood slit drum — to wake neighbours for sahur, the pre-dawn meal eaten before the day’s fast. “Tung tung tung” mimics the drum; “sahur” is the meal. Noxa anthropomorphised the kentongan itself: an AI-generated wooden log with a stern face, spindly limbs and bare feet, usually clutching a wooden drumstick that many viewers read as a baseball bat, standing in a dim night-village scene. The looping audio is a hypnotic, escalating “tung tung tung… sahur” chant with a short menacing monologue whose “lore” is that the creature comes for anyone who ignores the call to wake.

What it means / how it’s used¶

There is no real meaning — that is the point. Like the rest of the brainrot canon, the appeal is a nonsense chant welded to an uncanny AI image. It is used as a reaction sound, as a combatant in “which brainrot character would win” match-ups, and as raw material for tier lists and mock lore videos. Because it is rooted in sahur, it carried extra resonance in Muslim-majority Indonesia and drew both affection and some pushback over mixing a religious ritual with absurdist humour.

How it spread¶

Through spring 2025 the character exploded across TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and X, quickly becoming one of the breakout non-Italian faces of the Italian brainrot boom and one of the most-searched brainrot characters of the year. It was routinely paired with Tralalero Tralala and Bombardiro Crocodilo, and it became a collectible unit in the mega-viral 2025 Roblox game Steal a Brainrot, which pushed it deep into Gen Alpha play culture. Thousands of animations, remixes, songs and reaction videos followed.

Tung Tung Tung Sahur is a rare example of an Indonesian-origin meme going fully global, and a neat illustration of the 2025 moment: cheap AI image and voice tools letting a hyper-local tradition — the sahur drum call — mutate into a worldwide piece of brainrot within weeks.
