Sigma

Origin¶

The ‘sigma male’ concept emerged from online masculinity and manosphere forums as a supposed alternative to the tired ‘alpha/beta’ hierarchy: a self-reliant lone wolf who succeeds entirely outside the social order. In the pseudo-scientific ‘socio-sexual hierarchy’ those forums pushed, alphas sat on top and betas below, while the sigma was framed as the mysterious outsider who ignored the ranking altogether. Around 2020 and 2021 it gained ironic momentum through edits set to music, frequently pairing the idea with Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale in ‘American Psycho’) and with GigaChad. GigaChad is a set of hyper-stylized black-and-white photographs of Russian fitness model Ernest Khalimov, created by photographer Krista Sudmalis for the ‘Sleek’N’Tears’ art project and turned into a meme on 4chan around 2017. Those edits mocked the sigma idea as much as they celebrated it.

What it means and how it is used¶

Gen Alpha then stripped the term down to a simple adjective. As schoolyard slang, ‘sigma’ means cool, impressive, independent or admirable: ‘that’s so sigma’ is high praise, and calling someone ‘the sigma’ marks them as the standout of the group. Because it drifted so far from its manosphere origins and baffled most adults, ‘sigma’ also became emblematic of incomprehensible kid-speak. It is very often chained together with other Gen Alpha buzzwords like ‘rizz,’ ‘gyatt,’ ‘Ohio’ and ‘skibidi.’

How it spread¶

The ironic ‘sigma male grindset’ edits carried the word out of niche forums and onto TikTok and YouTube, where by 2024 it was fully absorbed into playground vocabulary. The phrase ‘Erm, what the sigma?’ then supercharged it: in spring 2024 a viral TikTok sound of a voice saying ‘Erm, what the sigma?’ spread rapidly, widely paired with a Squidward-sounding voice from ‘SpongeBob SquarePants.’ The line itself riffs on Stewie Griffin’s catchphrase ‘Erm, what the deuce?’ from ‘Family Guy.’ Traced to an early-March 2024 voice-message clip that was reposted to TikTok and then welded onto a Squidward ‘overstimulation’ edit that April, the sound racked up millions of plays as a catch-all expression of confusion.

Legacy¶

Sigma is a neat case study in how the internet digests and defangs an idea: a semi-serious manosphere archetype was adopted ironically, then flattened by children into a harmless compliment that the original proponents would barely recognize. GigaChad remains its enduring visual mascot, and the ‘what the sigma’ sound gave the word a second life as pure nonsense. To many adults, ‘sigma’ now mostly signifies that they have officially lost track of what kids are saying, which is a large part of why it stuck.
