Aura Farming

Origin¶

‘Aura’ as a countable measure of coolness spread through gaming lobbies and TikTok around 2023-2024: land something impressive and you ‘gain aura,’ embarrass yourself and you ‘lose aura,’ often tallied in captions like ‘+1000 aura’ or ‘-1000 aura.’ ‘Aura farming’ — deliberately doing cool-looking things to build up that intangible score — followed. The concept found its defining image in 2025 through Pacu Jalur, a centuries-old rowing festival in Kuantan Singingi, Riau, Indonesia. Perched on the prow of a long racing boat, an 11-year-old performer named Rayyan Arkan Dikha (born December 28, 2014) danced with unshakable calm — arms swaying, blowing kisses left and right — while at least a dozen adults paddled furiously behind him. He was performing the traditional role of Togak Luan, the bow dancer whose job is to energize the crew. A roughly 20-second clip hit TikTok and went viral worldwide in mid-2025.

What it means / how it’s used¶

To ‘aura farm’ is to pose or perform specifically to look effortlessly impressive — sometimes sincerely, often mockingly, since visibly trying too hard to farm aura ironically loses it. ‘Aura’ works as an invisible coolness currency graded on the fly: slow-motion edits of someone doing something slick ‘farm aura,’ while clips of clumsy fails get slapped with ‘-1000 aura.’ Dikha’s serene, metronomic composure atop a speeding boat became the gold standard the phrase points to.

How it spread¶

Remixers set Dikha’s dance to dozens of songs and the clip pulled millions of views across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Global sports figures imitated the moves: Formula 1 driver Alexander Albon and MotoGP rider Marc Marquez recreated the pose, and soccer players celebrated goals with it. News outlets from the BBC to the Jakarta Post covered the phenomenon; Dikha told the BBC ‘I came up with the dance myself… It was just spontaneous.’ Indonesian authorities embraced him, and reporting said his fame helped draw as many as 100,000 extra spectators to the 2025 Pacu Jalur race, with the boy receiving a scholarship and an official honorary title.

Though Dikha had performed the bow-dancer role for a couple of seasons, it was a mid-2025 repost that detonated worldwide, and by August 2025 outlets from Gulf News to the Jakarta Post were reporting a tourism boom around the annual race. ‘Aura farming’ pushed a piece of regional Indonesian tradition — Pacu Jalur — onto the global feed and turned a preteen bow dancer into an international symbol of effortless cool. The phrase has since hardened into everyday Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang for the performance of coolness itself, applied to anyone who looks unbothered and impressive while everyone else scrambles.
