Gigachad

Origin¶

Gigachad is a set of hyper-stylized black-and-white photographs of an extremely chiseled, square-jawed man. The images come from SLEEK’N’TEARS, an art project by Russian photographer Krista Sudmalis exploring an exaggerated ideal of male beauty. The model is widely identified as Ernest Khalimov, who runs the Instagram account @berlin.1969. The photos are so heavily edited that for years many viewers assumed the figure was a 3D render or CGI creation rather than a real person — a mystery that only amplified the meme. The name itself was coined on October 16th, 2017, in a post to 4chan’s /pol/ board that dubbed him “Gigachad… the perfect human specimen,” building on the older “Chad” archetype with “giga” pushing it to the extreme.

What it means / how it’s used¶

“Chad” is internet slang for a confident, capable, unbothered man; Gigachad is the maxed-out version — the aspirational ideal. The image is used to endorse a “based,” bold-but-correct take, to reward someone for doing the simple hard thing with total confidence, and as the triumphant opposite of the insecure “Virgin” or “Soyjak.” Though rooted in “Chad vs. Virgin” culture, it is most often deployed lightly and self-aware — a celebration of just being decisive.

How it spread¶

Gigachad simmered in niche forums for years before breaking mainstream in early 2021. In February 2021, creator Socialism Done Left popularized the “Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer” video format — sped-up footage as the “fan” versus a slideshow of Gigachad images as the “enjoyer” — a version that drew over 190,000 YouTube views and 134,000 on Twitter within a month. The format fused with a phonk remix of Bring Me the Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart,” which became the unofficial “Gigachad theme,” and the whole package exploded across TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter. Khalimov himself stayed silent until April 2021, then acknowledged the memes, later joking they made him seem “much more interesting” than he really is.

Legacy / cultural impact¶

Gigachad became one of the defining reaction characters of the early 2020s and a centerpiece of “sigma” and “based” internet humor. The lingering “is he even real?” question — genuine model versus digital fabrication — is part of the myth, and it fueled recurring viral hoaxes about the figure’s identity. Whether played straight or ironically, Gigachad endures as shorthand for supreme, unbothered confidence.
