What it means
From a Dos Equis beer campaign, this suave bearded man anchors the format 'I don't always X, but when I do, I Y.' It's used for ironic, self-assured statements about one's habits.
Origin
The Most Interesting Man in the World is a character created for Dos Equis by the agency Euro RSCG Worldwide, launched in the United States in 2006 and played by American actor Jonathan Goldsmith. Goldsmith, a working character actor with decades of television credits, won the part out of what he later described in a Reddit AMA as “a cattle call of over 500 people” followed by several rounds of casting. Each spot narrated absurd tall tales about his exploits in the voice of Will Lyman before cutting to Goldsmith at a table, delivering “I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis” and signing off with “Stay thirsty, my friends.”
From ad to macro
The campaign was online almost immediately: ads were uploaded to YouTube by April 10, 2007, the marketing blog Advertising 305 called it “a stroke of genius” in November 2007, and Time named it a top TV ad that December. A Meme Generator page was archived on November 22, 2009, and Quickmeme picked up the template in January 2010, but the format’s peak was 2011, when the “I don’t always X, but when I do, Y” structure became one of the most-used two-line macros on the internet. By April 2012 Quickmeme alone held more than 96,000 submissions, and the character’s Facebook page had passed 243,000 likes.
Meaning and usage
The template is “I don’t always [do X], but when I do, [Y].” It is used for smug, self-deprecating, or absurd statements of preference and habit. Goldsmith’s unflappable, worldly image lends every claim a ridiculous gravitas, so the joke is applying that grandeur to something mundane, ironic, or self-critical. The tone is dry and boastful, mimicking the ads’ deadpan narration, and it works best when the payoff undercuts the character’s supposed sophistication with something ordinary.
Its most durable descendant is the developer line “I don’t always test my code, but when I do, I do it in production,” which escaped the meme entirely and now appears on stickers and conference slides. Documented parodies include a “Most Ridiculous Man” riff for Vitamin Water starring Steve Nash, plus endless swaps putting cats, birds and mascots in the chair.
The retirement
Dos Equis ended the run in 2016. A farewell spot aired during Super Bowl 50 showing Goldsmith boarding a one-way shuttle to Mars over the narration “his only regret is not knowing what regret feels like,” and the brand formally retired him on March 9, 2016 under the hashtag #AdiosAmigo. French actor Augustin Legrand debuted as a younger replacement in September 2016. The brand said sales had nearly tripled since the character’s introduction, turning Dos Equis from a regional seller into one of the largest imported beers in the country.
Legacy
The character is one of the few advertising creations to become a genuine meme format rather than a failed attempt at one. Its two-line grammar outlived the ads themselves and still shows up whenever someone wants to state a habit with unearned authority — the same register later occupied by Gigachad and, in a more sneering key, by Condescending Wonka.

He is a character created for Dos Equis beer advertising, played by American actor Jonathan Goldsmith. The campaign launched in the United States in 2006 through the agency Euro RSCG Worldwide, and each ad ended with Goldsmith delivering 'I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis' and the sign-off 'Stay thirsty, my friends.'
What is the 'I don't always' meme format?
It follows the template 'I don't always [do X], but when I do, [Y],' used for smug, self-deprecating or absurd statements about habits and preferences. The character's worldly image lends every claim a ridiculous gravitas, so the joke usually lands by pairing that grandeur with something completely mundane.
When did the Most Interesting Man meme start?
The ads were on YouTube by April 2007 and a Meme Generator page was archived on November 22, 2009, but the format peaked in 2011 as a two-line image macro. By April 2012 Quickmeme held more than 96,000 submissions using the template, and the character's Facebook page had passed 243,000 likes.
Why did Dos Equis retire the character?
The brand wanted a younger pitchman for a millennial audience. Goldsmith's farewell ad ran during Super Bowl 50 in 2016, showing him boarding a one-way shuttle to Mars, and Dos Equis formally retired the character on March 9, 2016 using the hashtag #AdiosAmigo. French actor Augustin Legrand took over in September 2016.
