Yeah, This Is Big Brain Time

Origin¶

The line and the face both come from YouTuber Markiplier (Mark Fischbach), one of YouTube’s most-subscribed creators. On April 20, 2019 he uploaded a video titled ‘Baldi’s Basics 1 Year Birthday Bash’, an anniversary playthrough of the horror-parody game Baldi’s Basics in Education and Learning. At one point he successfully hides from the game’s antagonist, starts bragging about his strategy, and triggers a homemade visual effect that inflates his forehead to cartoonish proportions - as if his skull had to expand to house an enormous brain - while declaring, ‘Yeah, this is big brain time.’ The frame that gets passed around is a screen-capture of Markiplier at his recording desk, glasses on and over-ear headphones on, mid-sentence. Crucially, the ballooning-forehead effect is Markiplier’s own gag in the original video, not a later fan edit.

What it means and how it is used¶

‘Big brain time’ announces a moment of supposed strategic genius - a flash of galaxy-brained cleverness. In practice the phrase is deployed at least as often ironically as sincerely: people slap it onto decisions that are obviously short-sighted or dumb, letting the grandiose framing make the stupidity funnier. It works both as an image macro (the enlarged-forehead screenshot, sometimes captioned ‘it’s big brain time’) and as a standalone catchphrase typed into comments and chats right before someone reveals a plan, a shortcut, or a questionable life hack.

How it spread¶

Fans quickly saw the meme potential in the enlarged-head frame. The earliest known meme adaptation was posted to Reddit on April 27, 2019 by user Z_2000, captioned ‘When you spell a word correctly without looking it up’, and the format spread widely through late May 2019 across r/dankmemes and other communities. From there the inflated forehead was cropped, re-captioned, and pasted onto countless other characters, and the phrase detached from Markiplier entirely to become general-purpose slang for ironic ‘genius.’

Notable examples and variations¶

• The forehead effect photoshopped onto other characters, mascots, and public figures to imply ‘big brain’ energy.

Legacy¶

Because the joke lives in a single reusable phrase and a single instantly readable visual, ‘big brain time’ outlasted the specific video that spawned it. It became one of the defining ironic-intelligence memes of 2019 and a lasting fixture of gaming and reaction culture, still typed out years later whenever someone wants to crown a move as brilliant - usually because it very much is not.
