Origin¶

The format welds together two completely unrelated images. The left half is a screen grab from ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ season 2 episode ‘Malibu Beach Party From Hell,’ which aired on Bravo on December 5, 2011. In it, cast member Taylor Armstrong sobs and jabs a finger across a restaurant table while co-star Kyle Richards tries to restrain her. The right half is a photograph of a white cat named Smudge sitting at a dinner table, recoiling from a plate of salad with a look of pure disdain. Tumblr user deadbefordeath first posted the cat picture on June 19, 2018, and the cat later earned a dedicated Instagram account, @smudge_lord, created on May 27, 2019, which revealed his name.

What it means and how it is used¶

Stacked into two panels, the shrieking woman becomes one side of an argument and the unimpressed cat becomes the flat, dismissive reply. It is visual shorthand for a lopsided, petty dispute: furious accusation on top, unbothered ‘so what?’ on the bottom. People relabel the panels to cast themselves or others as either the raging accuser or the shrugging cat, capturing a ‘you’re mad, I’m calm’ energy that fits almost any disagreement, from geopolitics to what to order for dinner. The comedy comes entirely from the clash between raw human hysteria and total feline indifference.

How it spread¶

The mashup went viral on May 1, 2019, when Twitter user @MISSINGEGIRL posted the two pictures together with the caption ‘These photos together is making me lose it.’ The tweet detonated, gathering more than 78,000 retweets and 270,000 likes within two months and turning into one of the defining formats of 2019. It spread from Twitter to Instagram, Reddit and Facebook within weeks, and went on to win Meme of the Year at the 2020 Shorty Awards.

Legacy¶

The meme carried a heavier real-world backstory than most: Armstrong’s outburst came during a deeply turbulent chapter of her life, and her former husband, Russell Armstrong, died in 2011. Armstrong has spoken candidly about that history and has embraced her accidental fame to raise awareness of domestic violence, confirming publicly that she is indeed the ‘woman yelling at a cat.’ Smudge, for his part, became a genuine feline celebrity with a large following. Years on, the pairing still resurfaces constantly, a testament to how perfectly two random images can capture the feeling of a one-sided argument.
