What it means
Expanding Brain (a.k.a. Galaxy Brain) is a multi-panel template showing a brain growing more enlightened — or more absurd — with each step. Panels ascend from a 'normal' idea to a glowing cosmic brain, usually to mock fake-deep or increasingly ridiculous logic.
Origin
The template is a vertical stack of images showing a human head with an increasingly large, increasingly luminous brain — beginning with an ordinary greyscale scan and ending with a figure whose skull has been replaced by a glowing cosmic nebula.
The format emerged from the “Whomst” meme, a running joke about escalating levels of pretentious grammar (“who,” “whom,” “whomst,” “whomst’d’ve”). Each tier of absurd formality was paired with a bigger brain. A widely cited early example was posted to r/dankmemes on January 31, 2017, taking nearly 1,200 upvotes, and through February 2017 variations proliferated across r/dankmemes and r/MemeEconomy. A video version that month accumulated over 2.1 million views, and mainstream outlets including New York Magazine covered the format soon after.
What it means / how it’s used
The stack maps escalating enlightenment, and the joke is almost always that the escalation is fake.
The first panel is a normal, sensible position. Each subsequent panel is presented as more advanced, but is in fact more convoluted, more pretentious, or more obviously stupid. The glowing cosmic brain at the top is reserved for the most absurd option, and the humour lies in the format’s insistence that this represents transcendence.
Its two main modes:
- Descending into nonsense — the classic form, mocking overthinking, contrarianism, and fake-deep reasoning.
- Genuine escalation — a straight ranking where the top really is the best, played without irony.
The term “galaxy brain” grew out of the top panel and has since become an independent piece of slang meaning a take so overthought it loops back into being wrong.
How it spread
The format’s structure — a vertical ranking with an implicit hierarchy — turned out to be enormously portable, and it spread far beyond its origin communities during 2017 and 2018. It became a standard tool in technology, academic, and political commentary, where the “increasingly enlightened, increasingly wrong” structure describes something people argue about constantly.
It also spawned structural descendants. Panik / Kalm / Panik uses the same vertical stack but alternates rather than ascends, and countless four-panel ranking formats borrowed the layout wholesale.
Notable examples & variations
- Four- and five-tier stacks mocking overthought reasoning.
- Sincere rankings using the format straight.
- Versions where the largest brain is deliberately the dumbest option.
- Edits replacing the brains with other escalating imagery.
- “Galaxy brain” used as a standalone phrase with no image.
Legacy / cultural impact
Expanding Brain is one of the most influential meme formats of the 2010s, less for its own jokes than for what it established: the vertical escalation stack as a standard structure. Before it, most multi-panel formats compared two things; after it, ranking three, four, or five options in ascending order became routine.
Its linguistic legacy is equally durable. “Galaxy brain” is now used in ordinary criticism and political commentary as a compact way of saying that an argument has been reasoned so far past the obvious answer that it has become absurd — a term that started as the top panel of a joke about grammar.
