This Is Sparta

Origin: 300¶

The line comes from 300, Zack Snyder’s stylised adaptation of Frank Miller and Lynn Varley’s comic about the Battle of Thermopylae. The film is dated 2006 and reached US theatres on March 9, 2007.

In the scene, a Persian messenger demands Sparta’s submission and, when the negotiation collapses, protests: “This is blasphemy! This is madness!” King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, answers “Madness? THIS IS SPARTA!” and kicks him backwards into a bottomless well. Snyder shoots it in the film’s signature ramped slow-motion, which gives the kick a theatrical, almost choreographed weight — and makes it trivially easy to cut, loop and re-time.

Spread: YTMND and the trailer¶

The meme predates the film. The trailer circulated widely in 2006, and the first known “This Is Sparta” YTMND page was created by user heksaur on October 10, 2006 — five months before US release. YTMND, whose entire format was a looping image plus a looping sound clip, was the ideal host for a shouted three-word line: 85 “This is Sparta” YTMNDs were created between 2006 and 2009.

That site also produced the Sparta Remix, a self-sustaining subgenre in which the audio is chopped into a stuttering beat and layered over images of Leonidas mid-roar. Sparta Remixes became a genre unto themselves on YouTube, complete with naming conventions and long-running remix chains, and they kept the clip in circulation for years after the film left cinemas.

Meaning and usage¶

It is used for theatrical declarations and forceful rejections — any moment that calls for a dramatic, shouted no. People invoke it to reject an idea with maximum flair, or to announce allegiance to something with over-the-top intensity. The all-caps delivery and the abrupt kick supply a comedic bombast that survives detachment from the film. The tone is knowingly excessive rather than genuinely angry, which is what separates it from the many action-movie lines that never became memes.

The “This is [X]” construction also detached completely, working on any place name — the harder the emphasis, the better.

Legacy¶

The line escaped the internet quickly. It has been referenced on South Park and Robot Chicken, parodied at feature length in Meet the Spartans (2008), and invoked in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009). Nearly two decades on it remains one of the most quoted single lines in film-derived meme culture, alongside One Does Not Simply from the Lord of the Rings trilogy — two mid-2000s fantasy-epic quotes that became grammatical templates rather than mere catchphrases. Butler has spent years being asked to say it on demand.
