Origin¶

“Only in Ohio” grew out of a running internet joke that singles out the U.S. state of Ohio as uniquely cursed, dismal, or reality-breaking — with no actual grievance against the real Ohio behind it. A frequently cited crystallizing moment is the “Ohio vs. the World” wave on Tumblr around 2016, including a widely reblogged post by user screenshotofdespair declaring “Ohio will be eliminated,” which drew six-figure engagement and helped fix Ohio as shorthand for “the worst and weirdest place imaginable.” Earlier ambient jokes in the same spirit — variations on “at least you don’t live in Ohio” — floated around meme pages and forums, but none depended on anything Ohio actually did. The state was simply the agreed-upon punchline, chosen for its plain, unremarkable reputation.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The bit treats Ohio as a surreal, glitchy dimension where impossible or disturbing things are “normal.” Any bizarre, cursed, or AI-warped image or clip gets captioned “only in Ohio,” “welcome to Ohio,” or “meanwhile in Ohio,” jokingly blaming the strangeness on the state. A companion label, “Ohio final boss,” tags an especially weird or intimidating person or character as the ultimate thing to crawl out of this cursed Ohio. Because the reference explains itself, it can be bolted onto almost any strange video with zero setup, and it slots neatly beside other absurdist slang.

How it spread¶

The joke jumped from meme pages to short-form video, exploding on TikTok and YouTube Shorts. “Only in Ohio” clips went massively viral from around 2022 onward, and “Ohio” hardened into a core piece of Gen Alpha “brainrot” vocabulary — used almost as an adjective for “cursed” — alongside terms like “skibidi,” “rizz,” “sigma” and “gyatt.” It frequently stacks with those words into nonsense strings such as “skibidi Ohio rizz.” Related phenomena, especially the Skibidi Toilet web series, reinforced the association between Ohio and unsettling, surreal content. The usage became widespread enough that dictionaries and explainer outlets began formally documenting “Ohio” as slang for something bad, broken, or strange.

Real Ohioans, from ordinary residents to state institutions and sports teams, have largely leaned into the joke rather than fighting it, which only deepened its foothold in online youth culture.
