Chocolate Rain

Origin¶

“Chocolate Rain” was uploaded to YouTube on April 23, 2007 by Adam Nyerere Bahner, performing as Tay Zonday. He was a graduate student in Minneapolis at the time.

The video is one static shot: Zonday at a microphone in a plain room, singing in a startlingly deep voice that does not match his appearance, over a simple keyboard loop.

Two things made it travel. The first was the voice. The second was a caption that appears on screen partway through — “I move away from the mic to breathe in” — added by Zonday because viewers kept asking why he turned his head. It reads as an apology for a technical limitation, delivered mid-performance, and became the most-quoted thing about the video.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The song is frequently treated as absurd, which is a misreading Zonday has corrected repeatedly: “Chocolate Rain” is about institutional racism. The lyrics are a sustained metaphor, and the repeated title phrase stands for something specific and grim.

Online, its uses split:

• The voice, invoked for any unexpectedly deep sound.
• The mic caption, quoted as a stock aside.
• The song as a marker of 2007 internet culture.
• Sincere appreciation, which has grown as the lyrics became better understood.

That reappraisal is real. The video was largely laughed at in 2007 and is now more often discussed as a genuinely earnest piece of songwriting that a mass audience initially failed to hear.

How it spread¶

It became one of the defining viral videos of 2007. It was picked up by imageboard communities from July 11, 2007, featured on YouTube’s homepage on July 26, 2007, and had accumulated over 65.5 million views by 2011, making it one of the most-watched videos on the platform at the time.

Zonday participated actively. On July 18, 2007 he recorded a cover of “Never Gonna Give You Up” — an early crossover between two of the era’s biggest memes — and went on to appear in commercials for several major brands, in a Weezer music video, and alongside Stephen Colbert at a charity event in October 2010. He was parodied on South Park and Robot Chicken.

Legacy / cultural impact¶

Chocolate Rain belongs to the founding generation of YouTube virality, alongside Numa Numa and Keyboard Cat — videos that reached the entire internet before any algorithm existed to push them.

Its more interesting legacy is the reassessment. It is one of the clearest examples of an early viral video whose subject was laughed at for the wrong reasons, and whose actual content was more serious than almost anyone watching it in 2007 realised.
