Girl Dinner

Origin¶

‘Girl dinner’ was coined by Los Angeles TikTok creator Olivia Maher (@liviemaher) in mid-May 2023. In the original clip she shows off a plate of bread, cheese, grapes, and pickles and calls it ‘girl dinner’ - or, jokingly, a ‘medieval peasant’ meal. She has said the idea came from a video about medieval peasants supposedly surviving on bread and cheese: where the narrator found that bleak, Maher thought it sounded like her ideal dinner. The video struck a nerve immediately, racking up over 1.5 million views and inspiring a wave of users showing off their own no-cook plates.

What it means and how it is used¶

‘Girl dinner’ describes a low-effort, uncooked, snack-style meal eaten in place of a ‘real’ dinner - a charcuterie-adjacent assembly of bread, cheese, olives, pickles, crackers, cut fruit, and whatever else is in the fridge. The appeal is its honesty: it celebrates eating purely for yourself, with zero cooking and zero performance for anyone else. The phrase quickly generalized into a whole ‘girl [X]’ vocabulary - ‘girl math’, ‘girl dinner’, and the like - naming relatable, tongue-in-cheek habits coded as feminine.

How it spread¶

The trend went stratospheric when creator Karma Carr (@karmapilled), a Chapman University theater student, set the concept to an improvised a cappella jingle - ‘Girl dinner, girl dinner… oh, girl dinner’ - that became the trend’s unofficial anthem and soundtracked tens of millions of clips. Through summer 2023 the ‘#girldinner’ hashtag piled up billions of views; the TODAY show ran a segment on it, the phrase was added to Dictionary.com, and it even surfaced as trivia fodder. Within weeks it had gone from an offhand caption to one of the defining food memes of the year.

Legacy and controversy¶

‘Girl dinner’ also drew criticism: some dietitians and commentators worried that a number of the plates being posted were nutritionally thin and that the framing risked glamorizing under-eating or disordered eating, especially among the young women driving the trend. Most participants treated it as harmless, self-deprecating fun, and it endured as shorthand for the gloriously lazy, assembled-not-cooked meal - a small, relatable rebellion against the pressure to make dinner an event. Maher herself became a minor internet celebrity off the back of the phrase and later did brand collaborations, an unusually soft landing for an accidental meme originator.
