Origin¶

The photograph shows two members of a marching band. One stands with a sousaphone — the large, coiled brass instrument worn around the body — raised above her head, in the act of lowering it over a second girl, who is crouched slightly and clearly not resisting.

It is an ordinary band-practice moment: this is simply how a sousaphone is put on. Out of context it reads as something being forcibly installed on somebody’s head.

The image became a meme template on January 13, 2020, when a Reddit user posted it to a meme-economy community, describing it as a template worth investing in. That post took over 3,000 upvotes.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The format is three-part object-labeling for an imposition. The girl holding the instrument is the party doing something; the sousaphone is what is being imposed; the girl underneath is whoever is receiving it.

Its uses:

• A system, institution, or authority imposing something on a person.
• A community forcing a preference on a newcomer.
• Software updates and platform changes applied to users.
• Self-implicating versions where the poster is doing the imposing.

Its distinguishing feature is the absence of resistance. The girl underneath is not fighting it — she is bracing, accepting that this is happening. That makes the format right for things that are inevitable rather than contested, which is a narrower and more useful slot than most three-label templates occupy.

How it spread¶

Adoption was almost immediate. Within a day of the template post, versions across multiple communities had taken 37,000+ points and 7,500+ points respectively, and the format spread widely through January 2020.

It is closely related to the older Trumpet Boy format, another marching-band-derived object-labeling image, and the two are frequently mentioned together. Marching bands turn out to be an unexpectedly productive meme source: the instruments are large and strange-looking, the poses are unusual, and photographs taken mid-performance routinely look like something else entirely.

The meme is a good illustration of how ordinary photographs become templates: nothing unusual is happening in the image, and its entire meme value comes from the fact that a normal action looks bizarre when isolated from its purpose.

It also demonstrates the speed at which a well-composed template can now spread. From a single “this would make a good template” post to 37,000-point derivatives took less than 24 hours — a cycle that would have taken months a decade earlier.
