Origin: a 1989 kazoo tape¶

The footage comes from “Special Friends: Starring You on Kazoo,” a 1989 play-along children’s video in which kids sing, dance and work through a kazoo lesson to camera. It was produced by Melissa and Doug Bernstein, the couple who went on to build the Melissa & Doug toy company, as part of an early run of instructional tapes built around their products. Reporting on the tape describes a shoot spread over a couple of months, largely on a working farm in Connecticut.

Everything the meme runs on is present in the first minute: the flat home-video lighting, the earnest educational script, and an eight-year-old host performing at roughly triple the energy the material asks for.

Who the Kazoo Kid is¶

The boy is Brett Ambler, eight years old at the time of filming. He has said that hundreds of children auditioned, that the field was cut to around eight, and that he suspects he got the part because he was, in his words, the weirdest of them. His delivery is the reason the clip works — lines like “I like to sing, dance, pretend, and kazoo!” are shouted with total conviction, and the one that became internet shorthand, “Wait a minute… who are you?”, is aimed straight down the lens at a viewer who is not there.

Ambler stayed in performance. He works as an actor and musician in Colorado, appearing in regional theatre and playing upright bass in a band, and he only learned the tape had become famous when a child recognised him in Boulder and asked about it.

The remix that made it a meme¶

The clip drifted online in stages. Segments were uploaded to YouTube around 2011, resurfaced on Reddit in 2015, and spawned a run of amateur techno edits on SoundCloud. What turned it into a full meme was a single, much better-produced version.

On February 2, 2016, Los Angeles director and YouTuber Mike Diva released “Kazoo Kid — Trap Remix.” It chops Ambler’s delivery into a hook, drops it over a trap beat, and pairs it with an absurdist video. It reportedly took under a week to clear roughly two million views. Diva, who had already made videos for electronic acts including Kill the Noise and Steve Aoki, said he built it in one sleep-deprived overnight session and that the appeal was straightforward: the kid “is giving it his all; I respect his gusto,” over a tape where “there’s something very off about it.”

That remix is the version most people mean by “Kazoo Kid.” A wave of copycat edits followed — bass-boosted, sped-up, genre-swapped — which is the standard 2016 lifecycle for a sampled clip.

Meaning and usage¶

The meme trades on sincerity colliding with irony. The source is wholesome and slightly strange; the remixes are aggressive and slightly stupid; the gap between them is the joke. In practice it gets used three ways: as a quotable greeting (“wait a minute, who are you?” dropped on a stranger in a group chat), as a stand-in for uncomplicated excitement, and as shorthand for the low-budget educational media of the late 80s and early 90s.

Crucially, it is affectionate. Ambler is not the butt of the joke — the enthusiasm is the appeal, and that has kept the meme free of the meanness that attached to some other found-footage kid clips of the era.

Afterlife¶

The clip has kept accumulating views for a decade: the two largest YouTube uploads have been reported in the tens of millions each, with combined viewing across platforms put at over 90 million. Ambler, now in his forties, has given interviews about the tape and generally treats his accidental internet career with the same good humour the original performance suggests — a rare case of a viral childhood clip whose subject came out of it fine.
