It's Over 9000!

Origin¶

The line comes from Dragon Ball Z episode 21, “The Return of Goku,” first broadcast in the English dub on April 19, 1997. Vegeta, reading Goku’s combat “power level” on a scouter, is told the number and reacts with a shouted “It’s over 9000!” The delivery — cracked, incredulous, followed by Vegeta crushing the device — is what made the moment.

The number is a translation artefact. In the original Japanese manga and anime the figure is 8,000; the English dub, voiced by Brian Drummond as Vegeta, rounded it up to 9,000. Later English releases have gone back and forth between the two, but the dub’s version is the one that entered the language. Nappa’s stunned reply — “What, nine thousand?!” — is quoted almost as often as the line itself.

How it became a meme¶

The clip’s internet life began on October 17, 2006, when YouTube user Kajetokun uploaded the scene. A friend posted it to 4chan’s /b/, and it moved immediately. In a 2008 interview Kajetokun said the upload drew around 20,000 views overnight, then roughly 200,000 after the webcomic VG Cats picked it up. Urban Dictionary logged the phrase on November 21, 2006.

It reached saturation the following year through a 4chan moderator prank: a wordfilter that replaced the numeral “7” with “over 9000”, which made the phrase unavoidable across the site and cemented it as board vocabulary. YTMND sites, remixes and image macros followed in volume.

In September 2008 it crossed to daytime television, when a prank message containing the number was posted to a message board and read aloud on The Oprah Winfrey Show — an early, widely cited example of an image-board in-joke being laundered into mainstream broadcast without context.

Meaning¶

“It’s over 9000!” is pure hyperbole: a claim that some quantity is not merely high but off the measurable scale. The joke depends on the scouter breaking — the number is so large the instrument cannot hold it — so the phrase carries an implication of measurement failure, not just size. That is why it works for things that have no numeric value at all.

It is typically written or shouted in Vegeta’s incredulous register, and it functions equally as sincere hype and as mockery of hype. Beyond anime fandom it became general internet shorthand for “an absurdly large amount,” used for prices, temperatures, wait times, damage numbers and levels of any quality whatsoever.

• Image macros of Vegeta’s face at the moment the scouter breaks.
• Countless “power level” jokes rating things on an invented scale.
• References in video games, songs and advertising, where the number is used without needing to name the source.

Legacy¶

The line is one of the most durable pieces of anime-derived internet vocabulary, and it sits alongside Shoop Da Whoop and So I Herd U Liek Mudkips as evidence of how completely 2006-era 4chan ran on anime references. It regularly tops lists of the most iconic anime meme quotes, and it has outlived most of its cohort because it is genuinely useful: there is no shorter way to say “this number is ridiculous.”
