Origin¶

‘Press F to Pay Respects’ comes from Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, developed by Sledgehammer Games and released on November 4, 2014. Early in the campaign, protagonist Private Jack Mitchell attends the military funeral of his best friend, Will Irons, who was killed in action. As the solemn cutscene plays, the game interrupts it with an on-screen quick-time prompt: ‘Press F to Pay Respects’ on PC (or the corresponding button on console). Reducing grief to a single button tap struck players as unintentionally absurd, and the moment was mocked almost immediately. According to reporting, the prompt was a late addition: level designer Steve Bianchi has said the scene originally had the player hammer a pin into the coffin, a nod to a real military tradition, but it was reworked after a military advisor objected, and screenwriter Jon MacInnes reportedly was not consulted on the change.

Typing ‘F’ in a chat, comment section, or stream now means paying respects — offering condolences that can be sincere, sarcastic, or somewhere in between. ‘Press F’ solemnly, and usually ironically, acknowledges anything from a real loss to a trivial misfortune: a dead pet, a deleted post, a blown play in a game, a website shutting down. The single letter became internet shorthand for ‘rest in peace’ or ‘oof, that’s rough,’ portable enough to drop into almost any situation.

How it spread¶

The clip went viral through Let’s Play videos and widespread mockery of the funeral scene in late 2014, and ‘F’ quickly detached from the game. Streamers’ chats began flooding with ‘F’ after any defeat, and Discord, Twitch, and YouTube comment sections followed. The gag became so entrenched that developers referenced it deliberately, with later titles and mods baking ‘Press F’ jokes into their own death or funeral moments. News outlets and even brands have used ‘F’ to signal collective mourning, and ‘F in the chat’ entered spoken slang. The funeral scene is now routinely cited in games writing as a textbook example of ludonarrative dissonance, and it regularly lands on lists of the most unintentionally funny moments in video game history.
