Origin¶

The frame is from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Night Light,” which premiered on July 30, 2007. In the opening scene, SpongeBob is reading a scary book, and the animators have his eyes drift independently — each one settling on a different page at the same time.

It is a small visual gag lasting a second or two. Isolated, it becomes a picture of someone trying to take in two things simultaneously and succeeding at neither.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The format is object-labeling for wanting two incompatible things. Each page gets a label; SpongeBob’s divided eyes represent the poster refusing to choose between them.

It is distinct from formats like Distracted Boyfriend, which depict switching from one thing to another. This one depicts simultaneity — the desire to have both at once, and the resulting inability to attend to either properly.

How it spread¶

The earliest documented meme version is from April 22, 2018, when a Redditor posted a version with one page recoloured to distinguish it from the other; it took over 340 upvotes.

It reached scale that August. A version on August 2, 2018 took over 4,600 upvotes in six months, and on August 5, 2018 a repost — accompanied by a blank template — was followed the same day by an edit taking over 18,500 upvotes. Meme-tracking sites covered the format on August 8, 2018, and it spread widely across Reddit and Facebook through the rest of that month.

The template-publishing step is again the accelerant. The original post’s numbers were modest; the version posted alongside a usable blank outperformed it by a factor of fifty.

It endures because it names a state that other formats miss. Comparison memes ask you to pick; preference memes tell you which is better. This one is about refusing to decide — a condition that, in an internet built on infinite simultaneous options, is more relatable than either.
