All Your Base Are Belong to Us

Origin: an opening cutscene nobody proofread¶

The line comes from Zero Wing, a scrolling shoot-‘em-up released by Japanese developer Toaplan in arcades in 1989. The arcade original had no story sequence. The opening cutscene that produced the meme was written for the Mega Drive / Genesis port, which arrived in Japan in 1991 and in Europe in 1992, and its English script reads like it was translated word by word with no pass for grammar.

The exchange runs through a series of now-famous mistranslations:

• “Somebody set up us the bomb.”
• “How are you gentlemen !!”
• “All your base are belong to us.”
• “You have no chance to survive make your time.”
• “For great justice.”

The title line is the one that carried, because it is comprehensible and triumphant and wrong in every clause at once.

How it went viral¶

The phrase circulated on gaming forums and IRC through the late 1990s, but it needed two pieces to break out.

The first was music. In November 2000, Jeffrey Ray Roberts of the gabber act The Laziest Men on Mars released “Invasion of the Gabber Robots,” a techno track that remixed Tatsuya Uemura’s Zero Wing score and dropped the voice sample over the top.

The second was the images. A Something Awful forums photoshop thread filled up with the phrase pasted onto road signs, storefronts, product boxes, magazine covers and historical photographs. In February 2001, Tribal War forums member Bad_CRC cut those images together with Roberts’s track into a Flash video. That video is the moment the meme became mass culture — it spread through email chains, Newgrounds, forums and office networks, and mainstream press picked it up the same year.

It is one of the few memes that predates YouTube, broadband and social media entirely, and it moved anyway.

The Sturgis prank¶

On April 1, 2003, seven people aged 17 to 20 placed signs around Sturgis, Michigan reading “ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US. YOU HAVE NO CHANCE TO SURVIVE MAKE YOUR TIME.” Residents who had never been online read it as a genuine threat, police were called, and the story ran nationally. It is the clearest early example of an internet in-joke colliding with people who had no way to decode it.

Meaning and usage¶

The phrase works as a garbled declaration of conquest — announcing, in broken triumph, that you have taken over. It is used for hostile takeovers real and trivial: a team winning, a company acquiring a rival, one browser tab winning an argument.

Rules of use are strict. The grammar is never corrected. Rewriting it to “all your bases belong to us” destroys the joke entirely, since the mangling is the content.

Legacy¶

• It is routinely listed among the first true internet memes, alongside the Dancing Baby and the Hampster Dance.
• It established the Engrish genre — badly translated game text mined for comedy — and made mistranslation a permanent seam of gaming humor.
• The phrase remains a stock Easter egg in games, software and hardware, dropped in by developers who were teenagers in 2001.
• Today it functions mainly as a generational marker. Using it correctly signals you were online before YouTube existed, which is most of what it is for now.
