Anti-Joke Chicken

Origin¶

The source photograph is unglamorous in the best way: a hen shot by professional ophthalmic photographer Marshall E. Tyler at his home in North Carolina, later placed on the starburst background that the advice-animal format used.

The meme itself dates to early 2011. A Reddit thread titled “It’s the anti-joke chicken!!!!” was posted on February 20, 2011, linking to imgur images reportedly taken from 4chan’s /b/ board. Two days later, on February 22, 2011, the first Anti-Joke Chicken macro was created on Quickmeme, which is where the format industrialized. Search interest spiked in March 2011, and the chicken spent the rest of the year as a fixture of the macro generators.

The 1847 joke underneath it¶

The choice of a chicken is not arbitrary. “Why did the chicken cross the road?” is the most recognizable joke setup in English, and it appeared in print as early as an 1847 edition of The Knickerbocker, a New York monthly.

It is also, structurally, the original anti-joke. The answer — to get to the other side — is not a pun or a twist. It is the literal, correct, unfunny explanation, and the humor comes from the listener bracing for wordplay that never arrives. Anti-Joke Chicken is that 164-year-old mechanism restated as an image macro.

How anti-jokes work¶

The format follows the advice-animal layout exactly: setup on top, payoff below, Impact font. What it withholds is the payoff.

• The setup uses a familiar joke opening, so the reader supplies the expectation themselves.
• The punchline answers literally, flatly and truthfully.
• The humor lives in the gap between the promise and the refusal — the anticlimax is the entire content.

Delivery matters more here than in any other macro. The chicken’s blank, unimpressed stare reads as complete indifference to whether anyone laughs, which is exactly the register anti-humor requires. A comedian visibly enjoying an anti-joke ruins it; a chicken cannot.

Spread¶

The macro gave anti-humor something it had lacked: a portable, self-contained unit. Anti-jokes had circulated for decades as spoken bits and forum text, but a single square image carrying setup, payoff and delivery could travel across Reddit, Tumblr, Facebook and image-macro sites without losing its timing.

Dedicated anti-joke communities and joke databases grew alongside it, and the chicken became their default mascot — the face attached to the genre whenever anyone had to explain what an anti-joke was.

Legacy¶

Anti-Joke Chicken belongs to the 2011 advice-animal peak, when every recognizable comedic mode was assigned an animal on a radial background: Advice Dog for bad ideas, Philosoraptor for fake questions, Business Cat for office puns, Malicious Advice Mallard for deliberate sabotage.

The chicken has a better claim to permanence than most of them, because it is not built on a specific reference or joke style that can date. Deadpan literalism does not go stale, and the format survives in its natural descendant: the flat, unfunny reply used as a joke in itself, which is now a standard mode on every platform, chicken or no chicken.
