Origin: two words in a trailer

A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, reached cinemas on April 4, 2025. In one scene, Jack Black’s Steve watches a baby zombie riding a chicken enter an arena to fight Jason Momoa’s character, and announces the obvious with total gravity: “Chicken jockey.”

The line was memed before the film was even released. Warner Bros. posted the final trailer on February 27, 2025, where the moment appears at about the 1:58 mark; the trailer took over 21 million views in five days, and editors on TikTok, X and YouTube immediately began slowing, speeding and re-scoring the delivery.

The reference is real, not invented for the film. In Minecraft, a chicken jockey is a genuine mob — a baby zombie riding a chicken — and a famously rare spawn. Players who have logged hundreds of hours may never see one, which is precisely why announcing it deserves that tone.

The cinema phenomenon

What happened next was unusual: the meme moved off the internet and into physical rooms. Audiences, mostly teenagers, went to screenings specifically to shout along, and then filmed each other doing it. On April 4, 2025, TikToker @ickysnotbubble_ posted one of the earliest audience-reaction clips, showing a cinema erupting as Black says the line. It gained over 9 million plays and 2 million likes in three days.

Every reaction video was an invitation. Within a week the pattern was standardised: on “chicken jockey,” the room stands, screams, and throws popcorn.

Escalation and backlash

The escalation is documented and, in places, genuinely disruptive:

• A screening in Provo, Utah where someone brought a live chicken into the auditorium; the person was ejected.
• Incidents involving fire extinguishers and smoke bombs discharged during showings.
• Police called to restore order at several venues, and at least one violent altercation in a cinema car park.
• Multiple chains posting warnings against unruly behaviour, with some threatening removal without refund.

Commentators compared the whole thing to The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s participation tradition and to the Gentleminions trend of 2022, when teenagers in suits attended Minions: The Rise of Gru screenings — the same impulse, scaled up by three more years of TikTok.

The studio leaned in

Rather than fight it, Warner Bros. monetised it. On May 2, 2025 the studio released a “Block Party Edition” of the film that explicitly encouraged singing along and shouting at the screen, and in the UK Cineworld ran dedicated chicken jockey screenings with cosplay encouraged.

It worked. The film opened to $162.8 million domestically, finished with roughly $961 million worldwide, and ended 2025 as the fifth-highest-grossing release of the year and one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations ever made. Analysts widely credited the meme with a meaningful share of that total — an audience that turns your movie into a participation ritual is an audience that buys tickets more than once.

Why it stuck

The line is perfectly meme-shaped: short, absurd, delivered straight, and a genuine in-joke for the enormous population of people who grew up playing Minecraft. It also arrived with a built-in social ritual, which most memes never manage. Long after the cinema chaos subsided, “chicken jockey” survived as a shout-out reply, an audio on short-form video, and shorthand for a rare event that only the initiated recognise.
