Origin¶

The image is from episode 27 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, “King Crimson vs. Metallica,” which aired April 20, 2019. It shows Vinegar Doppio gripping his own throat as his personality gives way to his boss alter ego, Diavolo. The transformation is signalled on screen by a dramatic colour-balance shift rather than by any change in framing, which is precisely what makes the shot useful: the same composition exists in two visually distinct states, giving editors an instant before-and-after pair with no compositing required.

Spread¶

The screenshot was on Reddit a day before the episode’s listed air date, posted to r/cursedjojo by D0nut_boy on April 19, 2019. The same day, Redditor hradium posted the first captioned adaptation to r/ShitPostCrusaders, which collected more than 1,700 upvotes over six months.

The version that broke out was a heavily distorted, deep-fried edit. The earliest discoverable copy was shared by Twitter user @nitirushh on June 27, 2019; Redditor punishedjew reposted it on July 5, 2019 for more than 4,200 upvotes. Two large Reddit posts then pushed it beyond JoJo circles: one by warm-ice on August 28, 2019 took more than 16,700 upvotes in a month, and one by eirweshire on September 23, 2019 took more than 16,000 upvotes in a single week. How the format works¶

The two-state image works as a transformation reaction: the first state shows an ordinary or meek self, and the colour-shifted second state shows the person becoming a more confident, powerful, or unhinged version. Posters use it to depict a sudden shift in mood, persona, or energy — levelling up, snapping, or embracing an alter ego. The tone is dramatic and comedic, exaggerating a mundane change into an anime-villain transformation.

The distortion added in the deep-fried variants does real work. Crushing the colours and warping the frame makes the second panel feel like a system failure rather than a character beat, which is why the meme reads as unhinged rather than heroic. Meaning and usage¶

Typical edits caption the meek state with a trigger and the transformed state with the empowered result. It is popular for jokes about switching into work mode, gremlin mode, or a bolder personality, and for the moment a small provocation flips someone’s disposition entirely. Even outside JoJo circles it reads as a generic “becoming my final form” gag, and much of its 2019 spread happened on general meme subreddits rather than anime ones.
