End of the World (Flash Cartoon)

Origin¶

The End of the World — usually written “end of ze world” — was released on October 30, 2003 by Jason Windsor, posting under the handle Fluid, and hosted on the Flash portal Albino Blacksheep.

It runs about ninety seconds. A cursor draws a crude globe, a narrator announces “Hokay so, here’s the earth,” and within seconds the world’s nuclear powers have obliterated each other over nothing in particular. Countries are drawn as scribbles, speak in broad cartoon accents, and issue orders in mangled English — most famously “But I am le tired… Well, then have a nap. THEN FIRE ZE MISSILES!” Every escalation is punctuated by someone asking “WTF, mate?”

The subject is global annihilation. The treatment is a doodle with a bad accent, and that mismatch is the entire comic engine.

Spread¶

It moved faster than almost anything before it. The short dominated FunnyJunk’s trending list for weeks, spread through eBaum’s World, and was passed around by email, instant messenger and forum link at a time when there was no single platform to host it. Its script was posted to Rooster Teeth in 2005, and once YouTube existed, re-uploads accumulated over 16 million views within twelve years of the original release.

Several publications have since described it as one of the first genuinely viral videos — an animation that reached a mass audience through pure person-to-person forwarding, with no algorithm, no recommendation feed and no platform promotion behind it.

Meaning and usage¶

The cartoon’s mangled lines became free-floating catchphrases, used to joke about impending disaster or general chaos in a deliberately unserious register. Quoting it signalled membership: if you knew what “I am le tired” or “WTF, mate?” referred to, you were online in a particular way at a particular time.

Its lines were adopted as AIM away messages, forum signatures and running gags, and the phrases “we’re waiting for you, Gary” and “fire zee missiles” circulated widely as standalone jokes long after most people had stopped rewatching the original.

Why it worked¶

The short is a compact demonstration of what Flash animation was good at:

• Speed — the file was small enough to load on dial-up and short enough to watch in a browser tab at work.
• Crudeness as a style — the drawings are deliberately terrible, which sets the tone before a word is spoken.
• Density of quotable lines — nearly every sentence is a potential catchphrase, so the video propagated in fragments rather than as a whole.
• No context required — nothing about it needs explanation, so forwarding it to a stranger worked.

Windsor released a sequel on January 20, 2018, updating the premise with contemporary political references; it gained over 54,000 views in two days but never approached the original’s reach.

Legacy¶

The End of the World is a fixture on any list of the defining works of Albino Blacksheep and the Flash-animation era, alongside Badger Badger Badger, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Homestar Runner and All Your Base. It marks the moment browser animation stopped being a niche hobby and started producing mass-audience comedy — a lineage that runs directly into early YouTube and works like Charlie the Unicorn.
