Badger Badger Badger

Origin¶

The animation was made by the British animator and musician Jonti Picking, who works online as Mr Weebl, and released through the b3ta weekly email newsletter on September 5, 2003. Built in Macromedia Flash, it shows a row of crudely drawn badgers doing calisthenics, a mushroom standing in front of a tree, and a snake crossing a desert, over a gabba-style techno loop Picking wrote himself.

One technical detail explains a lot of its reach: Picking did not keyframe his animations. They were programmed in ActionScript instead, which made the files tiny compared with hand-animated Flash of the same length. On 2003 dial-up connections, that was the difference between a link people shared and a link people gave up on.

The structure of the loop¶

The rhythm is exact and never varies. A voice chants “badger” for three bars while the badgers lift their arms; on the fourth bar the mushroom appears and the chant switches to “mushroom, mushroom.” After roughly three cycles the snake crawls across the screen and the voice breaks into a startled “a snake, a snake” — then the whole thing restarts. There is no ending. The animation was built to run forever in a browser tab, and people left it running.

Spread¶

It spread through the same channels as every Flash-era hit: weebls-stuff.com, Albino Blacksheep, Newgrounds, forwarded email and forum signatures, alongside contemporaries like Peanut Butter Jelly Time and the Hampster Dance. Ringtones, screensavers and countless parody re-cuts followed. Picking had already launched the Weebl and Bob series, whose first episode, “Pie,” went up on June 6, 2002, and he built a long career on the same formula of looping musical nonsense — Magical Trevor, Kenya, Scampi and, in September 2009, Amazing Horse.

The badger cull single¶

The animation had an unlikely second act in British politics. On May 19, 2013, Picking released “Save the Badger Badger Badger” with Queen guitarist Brian May, featuring Brian Blessed — a mashup of the original badger loop with Queen’s “Flash,” recorded in protest against the UK government’s badger cull. It reportedly reached number 11 on the UK singles chart. May campaigned publicly for it, framing chart position as a way of forcing the issue in front of the government.

Legacy¶

In May 2026 the British Film Institute formally added the animation to its digital archive, storing two copies on separate robot-operated tape libraries kept roughly fifty miles apart in case of disaster. The BFI’s workflow requires tracking down the original creator and obtaining the source file, which is often the hardest part of preserving a two-decade-old web video; “Charlie Bit My Finger” has been preserved under the same programme.

It is a strange endpoint for a joke about repetition, and a fitting one. Badger Badger Badger is the purest example of early web absurdism — catchy, meaningless and impossible to dislodge from memory — and the chant is still quoted to describe anything mind-numbingly repetitive by people who have not thought about Flash in twenty years.
