Origin: opening weekend, July 2022
Minions: The Rise of Gru opened on July 1, 2022. Almost immediately, TikTok filled with a specific kind of video: groups of teenage boys in full formal suits walking into a cinema in slow motion to see a children’s cartoon about yellow capsule-shaped henchmen.
Wikipedia credits the trend’s origin to Australian high schoolers, and it spread on TikTok within days of release. The official Minions TikTok account coined the label “Gentleminions” on July 2, 2022, and the hashtag did the rest.
What actually happened at the screenings
The bit had a script. Arrive in a suit, in a group, filmed from behind in slow motion. Sit down. Then, at the moment Gru appears, perform his steepled-fingers gesture in unison. Applaud the villain. Take the film with total ceremonial seriousness.
The soundtrack was near-universal: “Rich Minion” by rapper Yeat, a track commissioned for a Cole Bennett-directed promotional trailer, which functioned as the trend’s theme.
Some screenings stayed at that level. Others did not. Reports described cheering that drowned out dialogue, bananas thrown at screens, mosh pits in the aisles, and refunds for families who had brought small children expecting a quiet matinee.
Cinemas push back
By July 3, 2022, photographs of cinema notices were circulating — one widely shared sign read that any group in formal attire would be refused entry to showings of Minions: The Rise of Gru following recent disturbances linked to the trend. Several UK cinemas implemented bans on suited groups, and the trend reached Australia, Norway, Singapore, Israel and the United States.
Universal was less bothered. The studio tweeted on July 1, 2022: “to everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you.” Illumination and the franchise accounts followed with videos of Minions themselves doing the trend. The commercial logic was obvious — PostTrak reported that 34% of the film’s audience was aged 13 to 17, an extraordinary figure for an animated family film, and the picture went on to become one of 2022’s biggest box-office performers.
What it was actually about
Two readings circulated at the time, and both are probably right. The straightforward one is ironic reverence: taking something aggressively childish and treating it as a prestige event, which is funny in exact proportion to how seriously you commit. Minions had spent the better part of a decade as internet shorthand for tacky, boomer-adjacent Facebook humour, and that history is what made the formality land.
The other reading is that it was the first post-lockdown cinema event for teenagers — a generation that had spent two years unable to gather, seizing on the first available excuse to show up somewhere en masse and be loud.
Legacy
Gentleminions belongs to the small category of memes that happen in physical space: Storm Area 51, planking, and later Barbenheimer, which turned a July 2023 release-date collision into an actual dress-up event. It is now the standard example cited whenever studios discuss engineering an in-person moment — and a reminder that the ones that work are the ones the audience invents.

Frequently asked
What was the Gentleminions trend?
A July 2022 TikTok trend in which groups of teenagers wore full suits to screenings of Minions: The Rise of Gru, filmed themselves arriving in slow motion, and treated the children's film as a formal event. The official Minions TikTok account coined the name 'Gentleminions' on July 2, 2022, days after the film's July 1 release.
Why did cinemas ban people in suits?
Because a portion of the screenings became disruptive. Reports described cheering that drowned out dialogue, bananas thrown at screens and mosh pits in the aisles, with refunds issued to families. By July 3, 2022 several UK cinemas had posted notices refusing entry to groups in formal attire for that film specifically.
What song is used in Gentleminions videos?
'Rich Minion' by rapper Yeat, a track commissioned for a promotional trailer directed by Cole Bennett. It became the trend's near-universal soundtrack on TikTok, playing under the slow-motion arrival shots that opened almost every video in the format. Hearing those first few seconds was enough to identify a Gentleminions clip before the suits appeared on screen.
How did Universal respond to Gentleminions?
It embraced the trend. Universal Pictures tweeted on July 1, 2022: 'to everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you.' Illumination and the franchise accounts posted videos of Minions doing the bit. PostTrak reported 34 percent of the audience was aged 13 to 17, remarkably high for an animated family film.
