Origin: a 13-year-old pug who would not stand up

Jonathan Graziano adopted Noodle, a senior pug, in 2016. Noodle had a habit familiar to anyone who has lived with a very old dog: some mornings he would get up, and some mornings he would collapse straight back into his bed like a dropped scarf, entirely uninterested in the day.

Graziano turned it into a ritual. Know Your Meme dates the first video to August 13, 2021, where he explained it as “a game where we find out if Noodle has bones this morning or not.” He would lift the pug gently into a standing position and let go. If Noodle stayed up, it was a bones day. If he folded, it was a no bones day.

Then he read the omen out to the audience. A bones day meant go for it — as Graziano put it, buy the lottery ticket, file that divorce, quit that job. A no bones day meant the universe had granted permission to do nothing.

Why it took off

The format worked because it inverted a familiar shape. Most wellness content demands effort; this one had a 13-year-old pug issuing binding rulings and quite often ruling in favour of staying in bed. It offered structure without pressure, and it was genuinely non-deterministic — nobody, including Graziano, knew which way it would go.

Timing mattered too. It broke out in autumn 2021, deep into pandemic-era burnout, when a very old dog announcing that today was not a day for productivity read as something close to a public service.

The escalation was steep. A September 22, 2021 video passed two million views in about a month; an October 4 upload cleared ten million in two weeks. By October 18, 2021 the New York Post and other outlets were covering it as a phenomenon, and viewers were posting their own #bonesday and #nobonesday videos, skits and forecasts.

The institutional phase

What separated Noodle from other viral animals is how thoroughly the real world adopted him:

• The New York State Senate formally honoured Noodle on November 24, 2021, during Senior Pet Month.
• Sports teams and public bodies began issuing daily bones-day rulings, among them the Minnesota Vikings; even The Smashing Pumpkins joined in.
• A children’s book, Noodle and the No Bones Day, was published by Simon & Schuster in summer 2022, and Graziano and Noodle appeared on The Today Show in June 2022 to promote it.
• Noodle made public appearances, including at Barktober Fest in Rochester, New York, in September 2022.

Noodle’s death

Graziano announced on December 3, 2022 that Noodle had died at 14 years old, of old age. The announcement video drew roughly 18 million views within two days, and condolences arrived from institutional accounts that had spent a year taking scheduling advice from a pug.

The meme ended with him, which is unusual and appropriate — nobody attempted a replacement dog. What survived is the vocabulary: “no bones day” is now general-purpose slang for a day you have no capacity for, deployed by people who have never seen the videos, and one of the small number of internet phrases that made the leap into ordinary conversation about rest.
