Vibing Cat

Origin¶

The Vibing Cat is a clip of a white cat rhythmically bobbing its head, which spread across Twitter, Reddit, and TikTok in 2020. It is most associated with a video of the blind Turkish street musician Bilal Göregen performing “Ievan Polkka” — a 1930s Finnish folk tune — on a hand drum; a version circulated with the head-bobbing cat edited in beside him, appearing to nod along to the beat. Göregen’s “Ievan Polkka” performance had been uploaded in 2019, and the cat-and-music mashup took off on Twitter around mid-October 2020. “Ievan Polkka” is the same Finnish song behind the 2006 “Leekspin” meme and later Hatsune Miku covers, giving it a long history as internet-native audio; Göregen, born in 1988, had performed it live on the street, and a Twitter user’s edit dropped the nodding cat in beside him. Accounts of the white cat’s real name and origin vary across retellings.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The Vibing Cat signals chill approval and pure enjoyment — the state of simply “vibing” to whatever is playing. Because the head-bob is a clean, loopable motion, editors sync it to almost any song, making it a universal music-reaction template: drop the cat over a track to say “this goes hard” or “I’m into this.” It thrives as a GIF, sticker, and Twitch emote for lighthearted, wholesome enthusiasm.

How it spread¶

The clip exploded during the meme-saturated back half of 2020. On Twitch it was turned into the wildly popular custom BetterTTV emote “catJAM,” a small looping animation of the same white cat nodding, which streamers enabled en masse so chat could spam it in time with music. Meanwhile the Bilal Göregen version became a remix magnet, with producers — including South African musician The Kiffness — building full songs around his “Ievan Polkka” performance. The cat’s bob was re-synced to genres from EDM to classical to game soundtracks.
