Piccolo vs. Spaghetti

Origin¶

The photograph is a piece of miniature art, not a screenshot. It was made by the Japanese photographer Tatsuya Tanaka, who has produced a daily miniature diorama since 2011 — arranging tiny figures against everyday objects so that food, stationery and household items become landscapes.

This one, posted to Twitter on June 18, 2019, uses Dragon Ball figurines: Piccolo stands with arms spread, shielding a small Gohan, while a tangle of spaghetti arcs toward them like an incoming energy blast.

The composition parodies one of the most famous moments in the series, in which Piccolo throws himself in front of an attack aimed at Gohan and is killed protecting him. Tanaka’s version replaces the attack with pasta.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The image became an object-labeling template for protection at a cost. Piccolo is labelled with whoever or whatever is absorbing the damage; the spaghetti is the incoming threat; Gohan is the vulnerable thing being shielded.

Its uses:

• A person or system taking a hit so someone else does not.
• A parent, teacher, or colleague absorbing a problem.
• Software or infrastructure protecting users from an underlying mess.
• Fandom versions about characters who sacrifice themselves.

The three-role structure gives it more range than a simple two-label comparison, and the source scene’s emotional weight — genuinely one of the most-cited moments in the series — means fans read the sacrifice into it automatically.

How it spread¶

The meme adaptation appeared roughly two weeks after the photograph. On July 5, 2019, a version was posted to Reddit taking 2,700+ upvotes, and a repost to a template community the same day took 3,400+.

The breakout came from a third post on that same day: a version on a meme-economy subreddit took 43,700+ upvotes within a month, and the format entered general circulation through that summer.

Three separate posts on a single day is unusual, and it reflects how immediately legible the composition is — the roles are obvious without any explanation, which is exactly what a labeling template needs.

The meme is unusual in having a named, living artist behind its source image who made it deliberately, as art, and shared it himself. Most templates are scavenged; this one was composed.

Tanaka’s wider project has produced thousands of miniature scenes, several of which have circulated online independently. That one of them became a globally used meme template is a reasonable outcome for work built entirely on finding unexpected meaning in ordinary objects.
