Scumbag Steve

Origin¶

The photo shows a young man standing in a doorway, head tilted, wearing a cocked fur-lined cap. It was taken by his mother, and it was not a candid snapshot — it was shot for the cover of “Ma Gangsta,” an album by the Boston-area rap group Beantown Mafia. The subject is Blake Boston, who performed as Weezy B.

The meme began on January 21, 2011, when a compilation of image macros using the photo was posted to Reddit and reached the front page with 8,607 upvotes. A commenter on that thread identified Boston by name, which is why the character had a real person attached to it almost from day one.

Meaning and usage¶

As an advice animal, Steve is the embodiment of petty selfishness — not villainy, but the everyday inconsiderate move everyone has encountered. Captions follow the standard top-and-bottom structure: a small favour or social situation on top, the self-serving betrayal underneath. “Borrows money — buys you a $2 gift with it.” “Shows up to the party you didn’t invite him to.”

The tone is comic and accusatory rather than genuinely angry. The format gave people a compact, lighthearted way to catalogue behaviour that is annoying but too trivial to confront, and the tilted hat and half-smirk do most of the characterisation before a word is read.

He was built as a foil. Good Guy Greg describes considerate, generous behaviour in exactly the same layout, and the two are constantly posted as a matched pair — the same situation, two opposite responses. Bad Luck Brian, who arrived a year later, completed the trio: Greg does right by you, Steve does you dirty, Brian just suffers.

The scumbag hat¶

The photo’s most productive element turned out to be a single object. Steve’s cap — a brown New Era Red Sox fitted — was cropped out and became the “scumbag hat,” a portable badge that could be photoshopped onto anyone or anything caught behaving badly.

That detachment was significant. The hat worked on politicians, cartoon characters, brands, inanimate objects and abstract concepts, and it required no knowledge of the original photo. It outgrew its source and became one of the earliest widely used “labelling” devices in meme culture — a way to assign a verdict to a subject without writing a caption at all. A “scumbag brain” and “scumbag steve”-adjacent variants followed the same logic.

The man behind it¶

Boston did not stay silent. He opened a Twitter account on January 31, 2011 and a Tumblr on February 7, 2011, engaging with the meme directly rather than trying to escape it. In May 2012 he released a rap video titled “Scumbag Steve Overture,” which reportedly gathered over 1.2 million views in a single day. In 2021, the meme sold as an NFT for a reported $57,000.

Legacy¶

Scumbag Steve is one of the defining character macros of the early-2010s Advice Dog era, and one of the first to raise, in public, what happens to an ordinary person whose face becomes a shorthand for bad behaviour. The hat is arguably the more lasting artefact: a reusable visual verdict that anticipated the object-labelling formats that dominate memes today.
