Cheers I'll Drink to That Bro

Origin: a street sketch, not a studio bit¶

The reaction image comes from The Eric Andre Show, which premiered on Adult Swim on May 20, 2012. The specific moment is from season 2, episode 4 — billed “Jodie Sweetin; Vivica A. Fox” — which aired on October 24, 2013 and reportedly drew around 1.31 million US viewers.

It is easy to assume the toast is aimed at a studio guest. It is not. It belongs to a recurring man-on-the-street segment called “Ranch It Up!”, filmed in a park in downtown Manhattan, in which Andre accosts strangers while wearing a green crop top, a pink hat and plaid shorts, and carrying a bottle of ranch dressing and a Wii remote. He pesters one man — whom he has nicknamed “Mellow Mike” — until the man tells him in blunt terms to go away. Andre raises the ranch bottle and says, “Cheers, I’ll drink to that, bro.”

The joke is that he treats an outright rejection as agreement, and toasts it with a salad condiment. “Ranch It Up” is not a fan nickname invented later; it is the sketch’s own title and a running feature of the show.

From clip to reaction image¶

The screenshot took about eighteen months to separate from the sketch, then kept climbing for five more years:

• March 29, 2015 — first known upload of screenshots, on the Tumblr blog “Ranch Me Brotendo.”
• 2016 — the image reaches Reddit’s r/AdviceAnimals.
• February 27, 2017 — a BuzzFeed article features a Twitter version, pushing it to a mainstream audience.
• March 1, 2017 — an r/me_irl post, reportedly 159 upvotes.
• February 6, 2020 — an r/dankmemes post reportedly clears 35,400 upvotes, the format’s single biggest hit, helped by renewed interest in Andre through Let Me In.

Meaning and usage¶

It is a bottom-panel reply. Somebody states an opinion, shares a small win or lands a good take, and the image is posted underneath as wholehearted endorsement — a “cheers, I’ll drink to that” of approval. Because the toast is being made with ranch dressing, the endorsement always arrives slightly unhinged. The gesture is earnest; the prop is ridiculous; the agreement is sincere but the delivery is not.

That gap is what distinguishes it from a plain thumbs-up reaction. Posting it says both “I agree” and “I am aware that agreeing this enthusiastically is a bit much,” which suits internet argument culture better than a straightforwardly positive image would.

Why ranch¶

The absurd prop is the entire engine of the joke and the reason the image outlasted the sketch. A bottle of ranch is domestic, unglamorous and completely wrong for a toast, and Andre plays the moment with total conviction. That mismatch is the house style of The Eric Andre Show, which built its comedy on deadpan commitment to nonsense, and it is why the still works stripped of the audio: the gesture and the bottle carry the whole gag without a word of context.

Legacy¶

The format has proved unusually durable for a screenshot reaction, still in circulation more than a decade after the episode aired and years after most of its 2015-era contemporaries were retired. It also sits inside a wider set of Eric Andre memes that have long since outgrown the show’s viewership — a programme with a modest audience that has supplied the internet with a disproportionate number of its standard reaction images.
