Deep Thoughts With The Deep

Origin: in-universe marketing¶

The format did not come from an episode. It came from the show’s fake corporation.

The Boys, Amazon’s superhero satire, maintains social accounts for Vought International, the in-universe conglomerate that manages its heroes. On July 27, 2022, weeks after the third season finished airing, the Vought International YouTube channel uploaded a video titled “Deep Thoughts With The Deep,” in which The Deep — played by Chace Crawford — works through a series of stray observations and pseudo-philosophical questions in the manner of a man who has just discovered thinking.

It cleared over 1.4 million views within two weeks. Within days, stills from the video were cut into a meme template, and the three-panel format first surfaced on Reddit.

Why the character fits¶

The Deep is written as vain, insecure and not bright, a hero whose power is talking to fish and whose defining trait is wanting to be taken seriously. The joke of the video is that the show gave him a philosophy segment and let the character’s own limitations do the rest.

The name is doing two things at once: it puns on his codename, and it echoes “Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey,” the Saturday Night Live segment that ran mock-profound one-liners over serene nature footage. The reference frame is decades old, and the joke is identical — solemn presentation, empty content.

The three-panel format¶

The exploitable is simple. Panels of The Deep looking contemplative, the “Deep Thoughts With The Deep” tag, and whatever text the maker supplies. The requirements are strict in one direction only: the observation must be presented as though it cost something to arrive at.

What gets filled in:

• Tautologies stated as breakthroughs.
• Obvious facts about everyday life delivered as hard-won insight.
• Genuinely stupid conclusions reached through confident reasoning.
• Workplace, sports and fandom takes framed as revelation, which is where most of the sports-account versions live.

The rule of the format is inverse proportion: the more banal the thought, the better the panel works.

Where it sits¶

It joins the long line of fake-profundity templates — Philosoraptor asking questions that answer themselves, Matrix Morpheus announcing the obvious as a revelation, Roll Safe performing intelligence while reaching a terrible conclusion. What the Deep version adds is a character the audience already knows is wrong, which does the setup work before a single word of caption is read.

It is also one of several meme formats The Boys has produced from its own marketing rather than its episodes, alongside Disgusted Homelander. Vought’s in-universe accounts function as a marketing department that is also a joke about marketing departments, and this is the piece of that campaign that outlived the season it was promoting.
