Origin¶

The clip is from The Boys, season 4, episode 8, “Assassination Run,” released on July 18, 2024.

Homelander — the show’s central antagonist, played by Antony Starr — is seated at a conference table when the character beside him coughs. His reaction is instantaneous and entirely involuntary: a full-body recoil, lip curled, head pulling back, an expression of undisguised revulsion at another human being’s proximity.

It is a small piece of acting in a scene about something else, and it is completely legible without any context.

What it means / how it’s used¶

The clip is a reaction for visceral disgust at something mildly unpleasant. Not horror and not anger — the specific, uncontrolled recoil at something gross, cringeworthy, or socially unbearable.

Common uses:

• Reacting to a coughing or sniffing person nearby.
• Responding to an embarrassing post or take.
• Registering distaste at food, behaviour, or a piece of content.
• Any moment of involuntary “no.”

Adoption was immediate and enormous. On July 18, 2024 — the day of release — a fan account posted the clip to X, taking over 6,300 reposts and 69,000 likes within five days. A quote-post the following day praising the performance took 15,000+ reposts and 290,000 likes in four days.

TikTok scaled it further: a captioned version posted on July 18, 2024 took 3.7 million views and 767,000 likes within five days.

Through late July 2024 the clip proliferated across X and TikTok as both a video reply and a still image macro. Its speed reflects the modern pattern: a weekly-release episode drops, the entire audience watches at once, and the best two seconds are extracted and captioned before the day is out.
