Longcat

Origin¶

Longcat is a photograph of a white cat held up under its front legs so its body stretches into an improbable vertical line. The cat was real: a Japanese housecat named Shiro (“white”), reportedly born in 2002 and taken in as a rescue, known online in Japan as Nobiko and nobiiru-tan, from a verb meaning “to stretch.” She measured around 65 cm (26 inches) and was deaf.

The photo first circulated on the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel (2chan) around 2004 to 2005, where a board was already calling her nobiiru by February 2, 2006. It crossed into English-language image boards through 4chan’s /b/, and the caption convention settled into “Longcat is looooong,” with the number of Os scaling to the ambition of the edit. Urban Dictionary logged the term on September 16, 2006, crediting /b/, and the earliest archived 4chan thread built specifically around her length dates to July 24, 2007.

Tacgnol and Catnarok¶

4chan gave Longcat an antagonist. Tacgnol — “Longcat” spelled backward, rendered as a colour-inverted black cat — emerged by 2009 as her opposite and nemesis. Users elaborated the pairing into Catnarok, a mock-apocalyptic prophecy in which the two cats meet in space and the collision ends the world. It was collaborative fan-lore with no author, no canon and no purpose, which is exactly why it worked: every new poster could add a panel.

Meaning¶

Longcat is one of the purest surviving examples of the exploitable — an image whose entire content is a single property that anyone can exaggerate further. There is no punchline to get and no attitude to adopt; the joke is the insistence, repeated at increasing scale, that the cat is impossibly long. Popular edits stretch her between planets, down the full height of a web page, or through the frame of an unrelated photograph. The format rewards effort and absurdity equally, and it demanded nothing more from a participant than a copy of Photoshop and a willingness to keep going.

• 2009 — the cat was folded into 4chan’s Catnarok mythology as a central figure.
• 2019 — Pokémon’s Gigantamax Meowth design drew widespread Longcat comparisons.

Legacy¶

Shiro died on September 20, 2020 at age 18, after a period of illness. The news was reported by Hong Kong outlet StandNews and spread quickly; memorial tweets drew more than 68,000 likes and 32,500 retweets within 24 hours, an unusual send-off for an animal most of the internet knew only as a shape.

Longcat belongs to the founding generation of image-board cat memes, alongside lolcats, Keyboard Cat and, later, Nyan Cat. It is regularly cited as the moment 4chan’s culture of collaborative, authorless remixing became legible to outsiders — a joke that could only exist because thousands of people agreed, without discussion, to keep making the same cat longer. It shares that lineage with the era’s other blank-canvas macros, including the O RLY? owl.
