So I Herd U Liek Mudkips

Origin: a DeviantArt recruitment comment¶

The standard story — that this started on 4chan — is wrong. The catchphrase began on DeviantArt, in a small fan group called MudKipClub, whose account was registered in early October 2004 (sources give both the 4th and the 5th). Its opening artwork did not even show Mudkip; it showed Swampert, the Pokemon’s final evolved form.

The first recorded use of the line is February 7, 2005, when the group’s owner began leaving “so i herd you like mudkips” on other users’ comment walls as a recruitment pitch — a completely sincere invitation to join a Pokemon club. Everything the phrase later became was an accident of that sales technique.

The Pokemon¶

Mudkip is a Water-type starter, number 258 in the Pokedex, Japanese name Mizugoro, introduced in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire for the Game Boy Advance — 2002 in Japan, March 2003 in North America. It evolves into Marshtomp and then Swampert. It was never an especially prominent Pokemon in competitive or story terms, which is part of the joke: of the several hundred creatures available, the internet fixated on a mid-tier amphibian for no stated reason.

How it spread¶

The phrase escaped DeviantArt and mutated into the deliberately broken lolspeak spelling — “herd,” “liek,” and eventually a terminal z on “mudkipz” — that marks it as mid-2000s image-board writing.

• Late 2005 — used as a non-sequitur comment on Fark.
• 2005-2006 — a long copypasta built around the phrase circulates on 4chan. Its contents are crude and unquotable, but its final line, asking the reader whether they like Mudkips, is what gave the joke its call-and-response shape.
• January 21, 2006 — the first YTMND site built on the phrase.
• January 11, 2007 — “Mudkip” is added to Urban Dictionary.
• 2007 — the copypasta is reposted across DeviantArt, PlayStation Universe and other forums, widening the audience well beyond Pokemon fandom.
• April 1, 2008 — DeviantArt runs an April Fool’s prank replacing every user avatar on the site with a Mudkip. Google search interest peaks that month.

Why it stuck¶

Mudkips worked as a shibboleth. Asking whether someone liked Mudkips was a way of finding out whether they were the same kind of internet person as you — the same function Reddit later got out of “the narwhal bacons at midnight.” It carries no argument, no punchline and no information; the entire payload is the reply.

That made it portable in a way sensible jokes are not. In 2008, participants in the Anonymous protest wave known as Project Chanology reportedly used Mudkip references on placards and in conversation as a way of recognising each other in person. Encyclopedia Dramatica adopted a Mudkip silhouette as the icon for its memes section. The Pokemon had become a badge.

Legacy¶

The numbers are modest by modern standards but large for a pre-YouTube-era forum joke: Know Your Meme’s entry has drawn over 1.2 million views, DeviantArt returns more than 10,000 results for “mudkips,” and the two biggest Facebook fan pages accumulated over 34,000 likes between them. Wikipedia editors ran a long-running argument over whether the meme belonged in Mudkip’s article at all.

No official acknowledgement from Nintendo, Game Freak or The Pokemon Company has ever been documented, which is fitting. Mudkips is remembered as the clearest early case of a franchise character being annexed by an internet subculture and given a second, entirely unofficial career. It belongs to the same image-board moment as Longcat and Shoop Da Whoop, when a handful of arbitrary images became the shared property of a subculture purely by repetition.
