Look What They Need to Mimic a Fraction of Our Power

Origin: Invincible, season one finale¶

The line comes from Invincible, the adult animated superhero series made for Amazon Prime Video and adapted from Robert Kirkman’s Image Comics run. It appears in Season 1, Episode 8, “Where I Really Come From,” released on April 29, 2021 — the finale of a season that had launched with three episodes on March 25, 2021.

It is spoken by Omni-Man, alias Nolan Grayson, voiced by J. K. Simmons, to his son Mark Grayson — Invincible himself — voiced by Steven Yeun. Mid-fight, Omni-Man is trying to talk Mark into helping him conquer Earth. He gestures at a pair of approaching fighter jets, machines humans built at enormous expense to do badly what a Viltrumite does unaided, and delivers the line: “Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power.”

Despite the grandeur of the delivery, the source is animated, not a live-action film. The same episode produced a second heavily used format in the “Think, Mark” speech, and Omni-Man’s fight scenes also supplied Omni-Man Blocks a Punch.

Spread¶

The template moved fast. The earliest documented meme use is a Reddit post on May 1, 2021 — two days after the episode dropped — which cleared 1,000 upvotes inside a month. It reached r/dankmemes by May 11, 2021 with more than 6,200 upvotes, and Instagram by late May, where a video version took 159,000 likes in five days.

It settled quickly into a fixed two-part comparison: the elaborate apparatus somebody else requires on top, the poster’s effortless equivalent below, with Omni-Man’s line as the caption. Know Your Meme records more than 167,000 confirmed uses, and the template has been a standing fixture on Imgflip since 2021.

Meaning¶

The format is a superiority flex, and its precision is what distinguishes it from generic comparison macros. The line does not say “mine is better.” It says “yours is a laborious imitation of mine,” delivered by someone who never had to work for the advantage in the first place.

Standard applications:

• A premium tool or piece of hardware against the improvised workaround that copies it.
• A programming language, framework or shortcut against a competitor’s more verbose equivalent.
• Fandom bragging that a rival franchise is imitating theirs.
• Any petty rivalry inflated to interplanetary scale — the mismatch between the stakes and the subject is where most of the comedy lives.

Why the source works¶

Omni-Man is not a straightforward villain, and Simmons does not play the line as a threat. He plays it as a father correcting a child: patient, faintly disappointed, entirely certain. That register is exactly what the meme borrows. Attaching weary paternal condescension to an argument about text editors, phone chargers or coffee makers is funnier than attaching outright aggression would be, and it explains why the format survived long after the specific scene stopped being fresh.

The visual helps too. Because the original shot has Omni-Man gesturing at something offscreen, the template has a natural slot for whatever the poster wants to belittle.

Legacy¶

Invincible turned out to be one of the most productive meme sources of the early 2020s, and this line is its most portable export — it needs no knowledge of the show, the character or the plot to land. It sits alongside We Are Not the Same in the small family of formats built entirely around unearned smugness, and it remains the default caption whenever someone wants to dismiss a competitor as a knock-off.
