Origin¶

The phrase belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s long-running idea of an “Avengers-level threat” — a crisis big enough to require Earth’s mightiest heroes — and the meme’s specific wording is drawn from Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), where Quentin Beck / Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, delivers the line while surveying one of his own manufactured illusions. Because posters quote it loosely and the delivery is already sarcastic in context, it is best treated as a paraphrased catchphrase rather than a precise transcription. It circulated as a reaction line during the MCU’s commercial peak, and the entry here is dated to around 2018.

The subtitled screenshot became a template within about two weeks of the film’s release.

• July 9, 2019 — Redditor 0w0-whats-this posted an early subtitled version to r/dankmemes, reacting to a Thomas the Tank Engine illustration.
• July 13, 2019 — an iFunny post by MDubz swapped the wording for a regional joke and reportedly took more than 100,000 upvotes.
• August 2, 2019 — a Reddit edit by QuazaGD about streaming-platform double standards reached more than 49,000 points.
• August 5, 2019 — a version by Redditor 379447984 about a manager haircut hit more than 32,000 points.

By late 2019 the line had detached from the screenshot entirely and was being typed as a plain comment reply, which is how most people encounter it now.

Meaning and usage¶

It is a reaction for the moment a situation suddenly turns serious — applied to everything from minor inconveniences framed as catastrophes to genuinely escalating drama. The joke is in labelling something small as if it were a world-ending crisis demanding a superhero team-up. The tone is mock-dramatic, borrowing the gravity of a blockbuster stakes-raise for everyday problems, so the bigger the mismatch between the trigger and the reaction, the funnier it lands.

Crucially, the source line is already ironic: Mysterio is a fraud reacting to a threat he invented. That built-in insincerity is why the meme reads as sarcasm by default rather than as genuine alarm, and it separates the format from straightforward panic reactions like Michael Scott “No God No”.
