Origin¶

“Peace was never an option” is a catchphrase that found its definitive image in the fall of 2019, attached to a cartoon goose. The phrase had circulated earlier as a caption — notably paired with a crude reaction drawing of a white chicken balanced on the handle of an axe — but it became iconic through Untitled Goose Game, the mischievous stealth game released in September 2019 by Australian studio House House. On September 24, 2019, Twitter user @erkshnrt posted the game’s goose standing on an axe handle with the line, drawing thousands of retweets. Four days later, on September 28, 2019, @CampbellxEmma tweeted the version that stuck: a close-up of the goose holding a butter knife in its beak — based on a promotional image for the game — captioned “peace was never an option.” That tweet gathered well over 20,000 retweets and more than 70,000 likes in a single week. (Despite loose attributions online, the meme does not come from Magneto or the X-Men films.)

What it means / how it’s used¶

The declaration announces, with mock gravity, that someone has chosen conflict, chaos, or petty mischief over calm — that peace was simply never on the table. The determined, knife-wielding goose supplies a comically menacing mascot for that energy. People deploy it to justify starting trouble, escalating a trivial spat, or betraying teammates in online games, all framed as an inevitable choice of war over peace. It works equally as a playful threat and as a self-aware admission that the poster is about to be a nuisance on purpose.

How it spread¶

The goose version tore across Twitter, Reddit and Tumblr in late September and October 2019. On October 2, 2019, Redditor Happinss-Noise reposted a version to r/dankmemes, where it collected over 43,000 upvotes in five days and pushed the format into wide circulation. The image dovetailed with the broader Untitled Goose Game craze — the game’s “horrible goose” was already a viral darling — and with a general wave of “chaotic goose” humor, so the knife goose spread as stickers, profile pictures, and reaction images well beyond the original tweets.
