Origin¶

The line is spoken by Dr. Otto Octavius — better known as Doctor Octopus, played by Alfred Molina — in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 (2004). At a public demonstration of his experimental fusion reactor, Octavius uses his four AI-driven mechanical arms to ignite a small, blazing artificial sun suspended above the fuel source. Wearing distinctive round protective goggles — one lens dark, the other glowing with the reactor’s light — he holds his hand toward the miniature star and marvels, “The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand.” Moments later the experiment destabilizes, killing his wife Rosie and fusing the sentient arms to his spine — the accident that turns him into the film’s villain. That goggle close-up, with one lens blazing, is the shot most associated with the meme.

As a meme, the quote is pasted over images of people or characters cradling anything small, warm, bright, or “powerful” — a light bulb, a candle, a lighter, a hot snack, a phone at full brightness.
