Conspiracy Keanu

Origin: one frame from Bill & Ted¶

The image is a screenshot of Keanu Reeves as Ted in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), wide-eyed and slack-jawed in a scene in which the character is being chased by medieval knights. The frame reached a wide audience well before it was a meme: New York Magazine’s Vulture blog published it on December 11, 2008, in a piece cataloguing Reeves’s facial expressions. That is the expression the whole joke rests on — dawning, unearned revelation.

The still was used as a plain reaction image first. It appears on the Fark forums as early as September 17, 2010, before anyone had attached a caption structure to it.

The macro takes shape¶

The first known image macro in the finished format was posted to r/funny on June 2, 2011, reading “What if we CAN breathe in space / and they just don’t want us to escape.” It collected 6,847 upvotes, and the two-line advice-animal structure locked in immediately: a mundane premise on top, a paranoid reinterpretation underneath.

Infrastructure followed fast, in the way it did for every successful macro of that era:

• September 24, 2011 — a widely shared FunnyJunk submission about miniature universes.
• November 19, 2011 — a dedicated Facebook fan page.
• December 18, 2011 — the domain ConspiracyKeanu.com registered.
• By April 2012 — 37,458 submissions on Quickmeme, the generator that industrialised the format.

That generator flood is why the meme is dated to 2012 in most retrospectives even though the first macro predates it by a year.

Meaning and usage¶

Conspiracy Keanu poses stoner-philosophy hypotheticals and mock-conspiracies. The tone is playful and self-aware; it parodies dorm-room philosophising rather than promoting anything. Keanu’s amazed expression sells fake profundity, framing a silly or circular thought as a revelation, and the format rewards captions whose logic collapses the moment you inspect it. Canonical entries include “What if the CIA invented dinosaurs to discourage time travel,” “What if all the specks we see in the light are miniature universes?” and the perennial “What if plants are farming us?”

Crucially, the joke is on the speaker, not the subject. Nobody posting Conspiracy Keanu believes the caption — the humour is in the confidence of the delivery.

Where it sits¶

The macro belongs to a cluster of “mock-profound” advice animals that peaked together in 2011 and 2012, alongside Philosoraptor, Paranoid Parrot and Stoner Dog. Each takes a different route to the same destination: a stupid thought presented as a breakthrough. On the site it sits naturally next to Ancient Aliens and Matrix Morpheus, and it is one of several distinct Keanu Reeves memes to emerge independently of one another, along with Sad Keanu.

Legacy¶

The advice-animal era it belongs to has largely passed — Quickmeme’s caption-generator model gave way to screenshot and object-label formats — but Conspiracy Keanu survives as shorthand. The “whoa” face is now used on its own, without the two-line caption, to mark the moment a conversation takes an absurd turn. Its structure also outlived its image: the “What if [ordinary thing] is secretly [wild reinterpretation]” construction is one of the durable joke skeletons of the 2010s internet, reused constantly on Twitter and TikTok by people who have never seen the original macro or the film it came from.
