Sad Keanu

Origin: a bench, a sandwich, a paparazzo¶

The photograph was taken in May 2010 in New York by Splash News photographer Ron Asadorian. It shows Keanu Reeves sitting alone on a bench, hunched slightly forward, eating a sandwich and staring at nothing in particular. It is an entirely ordinary picture of a man having lunch.

Read as a still image, it looks like grief. The internet read it that way immediately.

How it spread¶

The photo moved through the image boards first. The earliest known photoshop thread appeared on May 23, 2010, on a 4chan-style archive’s film board, followed by a 4chan thread on June 1, 2010. On June 3, 2010, Reddit user rockon4life posted it in a thread simply titled “Keanu,” and the cutout — Reeves isolated from his background, ready to be dropped anywhere — became one of the most-used exploitables of the year.

The striking part is the tone. Celebrity candids in 2010 were raw material for mockery, and this one went the other way. Users pasted him into paintings, video games, film stills, group photos and album covers, and the recurring gag was keeping him company rather than humiliating him. On June 15, 2010, the internet declared an unofficial Cheer Up Keanu Day.

The copyright fight¶

The meme also produced an early lesson about who owns a viral image. On June 17, 2010, SadKeanu.com received a DMCA takedown notice from Splash News, which held the copyright to Asadorian’s photograph. More than 270 posts were removed and the dedicated site eventually shut down.

The meme did not stop — it had already scattered across Reddit, 4chan and Tumblr — but the episode is frequently cited as an early case of paparazzi copyright colliding with a remix culture that assumed viral images were free.

Keanu’s own answer¶

Reeves has addressed the photo directly over the years, and his explanation deflates the whole premise: he was not sad. He was hungry, sitting down, eating lunch. The image captured a neutral moment and the internet supplied the emotion.

His unbothered response to becoming a symbol of quiet sadness fed directly into the public affection that followed. Sad Keanu was the first widely shared piece of the “Keanu is a good person” narrative that grew through the 2010s, running from Conspiracy Keanu to the John Wick era and the You’re Breathtaking moment at E3 2019.

Meaning and usage¶

Sad Keanu is a reaction image for a low mood rather than a crisis: mild loneliness, a flat afternoon, being left out, waiting for something that is not coming. It is closer to melancholy than misery.

• Posted about oneself as a gentle admission of feeling down.
• Photoshopped into a scene so the subject “has company.”
• Used as a caption for anything quietly disappointing.

The defining feature is that the joke is sympathetic. Almost every other celebrity-candid meme of the era punched at its subject; this one wanted to sit next to him. That warmth is why it is still cited as the template for a wholesome reaction meme, and why the image survives sixteen years after an ordinary lunch break.
