Hulk Gives Ant-Man a Taco

Origin¶

The moment is from Avengers: Endgame, released in the United States on April 26, 2019. Outside a New Jersey diner, Professor Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is talking with Scott Lang / Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) when the Benatar comes in to land nearby. The downdraft blows the filling straight out of Scott’s taco shell, leaving him holding an empty tortilla and a devastated expression. Hulk, without a word, hands over his own taco.

It lasts a few seconds and has no bearing on the plot. In a three-hour film about mass loss, it is a joke about a snack — which is precisely why it stuck. The beat is warm, silent and completely disproportionate to its stakes, and audiences noticed it immediately.

Spread¶

The meme took shape on Reddit over about a month:

• April 28, 2019 — two days after release, Redditor Sagelegend posted an “Avenge the Fallen” poster parody referencing the taco to r/EndgameSpoilers.
• May 7, 2019 — Redditor nowthatsashame used a still of Hulk offering the taco in the “Nobody:” format on the same subreddit.
• May 8, 2019 — Redditor KingShavi posted an object-labelling version to r/thanosdidnothingwrong, which gathered over 34,000 upvotes in 17 days.
• May 17, 2019 — multiple labelled versions circulated in the Marvel Shieldposting Facebook group.
• May 23, 2019 — Redditor Shiteingann posted a version to r/dankmemes that drew over 97,300 upvotes in two days, and shared the clean template to r/InsiderMemeTrading.

Two ways to use it¶

The scene supports two distinct formats, which is unusual and explains its durability.

As a reaction, it captures small, low-stakes disappointment — losing something trivial the instant you get it, a minor mishap that quietly deflates an otherwise nice moment. The tone is gentle and bittersweet rather than dramatic, which makes it useful for the enormous category of things that are annoying but not actually bad.

As an object-labelling exploitable, it becomes a picture of one party giving something to another. Label the taco, label Hulk, label Ant-Man, and it works for any act of quiet generosity: a friend covering for you, a piece of software solving a problem, one fandom handing something to another. This is the version that produced the biggest posts.

Legacy¶

Endgame generated an unusually large crop of memes, most of them built on its biggest moments — I See This as an Absolute Win, I’m Still Worthy and Now This Is an Avengers-Level Threat all come from the same film cycle. The taco is the outlier: the one that survived on tenderness rather than spectacle.

It has aged well because it is legible without the film. Someone who has never seen Endgame still understands a large green man handing a small sad man a replacement taco, and that is the whole joke. Its closest cousin is Regretful Hulk — the same character, the same register, mined for the same low-stakes emotional comedy.
