Origin¶

The clip comes from WandaVision, Marvel’s first Disney+ series, which premiered on January 15, 2021. Kathryn Hahn plays Agnes, the relentlessly nosy neighbour who is eventually revealed to be the centuries-old witch Agatha Harkness. Know Your Meme traces the winking shot to the third episode, “Now in Color,” released on January 22, 2021 — though a GIF of the moment was already circulating before that. USA Today reporter Alex Biese posted one to Twitter on January 9, 2021, six days before the series even premiered, apparently sourced from promotional footage; it drew over 950 likes and 40 retweets across the following two months.

Spread¶

Once the show became appointment viewing the GIF spread far beyond Marvel circles:

• February 19, 2021 — a remix pairing the wink with the Grant Gustin next to Oliver Queen’s grave image collected over 5,200 likes and 900 retweets in two weeks.
• February 23, 2021 — a version about the reality series The Bachelor drew more than 3,000 likes in under a week.
• February 25, 2021 — a post applying the wink to the Chekhov’s gun narrative principle reached 75,000 likes and 8,200 retweets in three days, the meme’s single biggest moment.

Meaning and usage¶

The wink is deployed for playful complicity. Its core register is the open secret: something everyone already knows but nobody has said out loud, an obvious lie delivered with a straight face, or a hint the poster wants read between the lines. It also works as pure setup acknowledgement — dropped under a detail that will obviously matter later, which is exactly what the viral Chekhov’s gun post was doing. The tone is conspiratorial and slightly smug rather than sincere, which is why it lands so well in replies and group chats.

What separates it from ordinary reaction GIFs is that it asserts something about the reader as well as the poster: the wink claims you are both on the same side of a piece of information, and that whoever the joke is about is not. That framing makes it useful for spoiler-adjacent hinting, for pointing at a twist everybody has already guessed, and for the particular pleasure of watching an institution insist on something obviously untrue.

Why it fits the character¶

The wink works because it is genuinely in character rather than an accident of framing. Agnes spends the series performing neighbourly warmth while quietly steering events, and the show’s later reveal recontextualises everything she does earlier — including that look. The accompanying song “Agatha All Along,” written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, was itself a hit, charting on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales listing in March 2021 and winning a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

Legacy¶

The GIF outlived the show’s news cycle and got a second wind when Hahn’s character headlined her own Disney+ spin-off, Agatha All Along, in September 2024. It remains one of the most-used “I know something you don’t” reactions in circulation — one of a very small number of MCU moments, alongside I’m Still Worthy, to become a general-purpose reaction rather than a fandom in-joke.
