Origin¶

The meme comes from the animated superhero series Invincible, based on Robert Kirkman’s comic and released on Amazon Prime Video. In the second episode, ‘Here Goes Nothing,’ which premiered on March 26, 2021, teenage hero Mark Grayson asks his superpowered father Nolan Grayson — the Superman-like Omni-Man — how he is supposed to breathe in space. Omni-Man calmly replies, ‘That’s the neat thing: you don’t.’ The exploitable image is a shot of Omni-Man pointing as he delivers the line. Online, the wording was tweaked slightly to the now-standard ‘That’s the neat part, you don’t.’ Invincible was created by Robert Kirkman, the writer behind The Walking Dead, and adapted from his long-running Image Comics series; Mark is voiced by Steven Yeun and Omni-Man by J.K. Simmons, whose calm, authoritative delivery is a big part of why the line lands.

The phrase is a darkly comic way to answer a question about solving or surviving a problem by revealing that there is no solution at all — you simply don’t.
